:: THE INTERNATIONAL THEATRE SCHOOL :: |
The pedagogy of our school is focused toward the creative development of each individual. Therefore, the school is not just for the traditional 'actor' but more precisely, for theatre creators.
The teaching approach is based on the body in movement and the artist in play.
The body is considered the first area of knowledge and sensitivity of the theatre artist and the foundation for theatrical language. The experience and the study of the body moving in space leads to the progressive discovery of the laws of movement and of artistic creation.
Play exists where the rigour of technique meets the pleasure of the artist. The playing performer represents and reinvents the world, revealing its poetic richness.
This approach is grounded in a communal & collaborative work where each participant discovers the fundamental tools for theatre creation: the body, voice, space, levels of playing, performing, directing, playwriting, the relationship with the audience, and the dynamics of the creative ensemble. Throughout the coursework of the training programme, the aim is to provoke students to develop their own unique, poetic identity and theatrical folly.
This programme is a journey that begins with the study of movement in life and leads to the understanding of its transposition for the theatre. It is a progressive discovery of the fundamental laws of movement and artistic creation.
The teaching of the School, in permanent evolution, is the result of the multiple experiences of the staff, who all share the common background in the approach of Jacques Lecoq.
THE COURSES
The school proposes seven different courses of study:
Physical Preparation through Martial Arts
Theatre inspired Acrobatics
Movement Analysis and Movement Technique
Improvisation
Voice
Approach to text
Creation
Classes take place each morning, Monday through to Friday, for a total of 18 hours teaching each week, plus 10 hours of creation.
At the beginning of each week, the students receive a theme on which they work in an autonomous class (creation). This course culminates, at the end of each week, into a presentation of their resulting research to the teaching staff. At the end of each trimester the students present elements of their work for a scheduled public performance.
In addition, the school proposes some weekend intensive training workshops, where different teachers from outside intervene, contributing to the artistic and educational research of the school. During different periods of the year, the School proposes some outings, to observe nature and human life, renewing sources of inspiration.
After the end of the second year, an optional period of training is proposed: a creation project with the aim of devising a show. This project involves regular supervision by the teaching staff and close collaboration with the Kėklos Teatro Company.
THE PROGRAMME
The program extends over two years.
The first year is a rediscovery of nature and human life through the study of their movement. The mimo-dynamic observation of life, the first source of inspiration of the mime-actor, allows students to enter into a theatre that is a creation and re-creation of the world transformed by their individual sensitivity and unique regard. This process enriches their expressive body and prepares them for the varying dynamics that different theatre styles require.
The second year is specifically dedicated to theatre making, and proposes a journey through different theatre styles, following in the footsteps of the three founding areas of ancient theatre: tragedy, satire, and comedy. It aims to give students the tools to discover how each style has a specific way of dealing with various elements in theatre: the body, space, levels of playing, the relationship with the audience and the writing of text.
