:: THE INTERNATIONAL THEATRE COMPANY ::
Kėklos Teatro is a circle (kėklos) of artists and researchers in the field of theatre play. Theatre is play and metaphor.

Play because it is an envigorating experience based in the rigour and pleasure of both the actor and audience.

Metaphor because it is a constant search of poetic forms suitable for representing life and its movement. The actor-creator therefore becomes someone who recreates the world in his every gesture, and in this re-creation exists the poetry of our shared stories.

The company's work follows the tradition of physical theatre which, rooted in the theatre of antiquity and the Commedia dell'Arte, places the body in a space where it is at the centre of the theatrical process, developing a poetry of gesture and mastery of the actor-creator's body. The company is made up of an international group of artists based in Padua, in addition to many others from various countries who take part in specific projects.

L'Anconitana
(The Woman from Ancona)
by Ruzante

In the company's inaugural season, Kėklos Teatro produced its first production. Using the 16th century text of the Paduan playwright Angelo Ruzante Beolco, the company toured L'Anconitana to four festivals in the 2000 summer Italian theatre circuit in collaboration with an established Italian theater production company, Moby Dick Teatri della Riviera. In modernizing this classic text, director Malachi Bogdanov employed the grotesque theatre style of bouffon, while still keeping with the play's original charm of Harlequin & Pantaloon masks of the Commedia dell'Arte.

The tour:
Premiere at the Festival delle Ville, Piove di Sacco
Crepino gli Artisti Festival, Aprilia (Rome)
Tenera č la notte - Senza Sipario, Perugia
VivArena Teatro & Musica Festival, Padua

The production was directed by Associate Director of the English Shakespeare Company of London, Malachi Bogdanov, with founding members Paola Coletto-Kaplan and Sean Kaplan performing. The cast included four other performers: two from Australia, one from Sweden and one from Holland. The set design was by Tomislav Svilokos of Crotia and the costumes were designed by Sandra Franco of Italy. Following the tour of the production, Malachi Bogdanov became a member of the Advisory Board of Kėklos Teatro and moved from London to Padua to join as Resident Director and collaborator in the company's Artistic Direction.

The Merchant of Venice
by William Shakespeare

During the second season, the company premiered the classic Merchant of Venice in Italy, followed by a tour of Europe beginning in Switzerland and finishing in England. The production was produced in collaboration with the English theatre production company ICE-International Creative Experience of London.

This fast paced adaptation takes the original text with Shakespeare's cast of Venetian Christians against the artfully conceived Jewish merchant-lender Shylock and amplifies the situations with a dizzying pace of quick changes and high-flying character readings that render a very fresh and definitely slap-stick, contemporary glimpse into a 16th century classic.

The Merchant of Venice Tour:
Premiere in Belluno (Treviso), Italy
Piove di Sacco, Italy
Geneva, Switzerland
Brighton, England
Bath, England

The production was directed by Resident Director Malachi Bogdanov with five actors from England. The set design was by Tomislav Svilokos of Croatia. The costumes were designed by Sandra Franco of Italy and Karen Rolfe of England.
